Home and Away star calls for more diversity

Home and Away star Ray Meagher has spoken out about the iconic soap changing direction from its original premise and how he wants better LGBTQ+ representation on the show.

Meagher, who has played Alf Stewart on the show since 1988 and is signed on until at least 2027, shared his thoughts on the show's creative direction.

The soap, which has explored every possible plot line with cults, abductions, car and motorcycle accidents, health scares, and more, started to go on a different journey following the introduction of the River boys in 2011, with the storyline now focusing more on crimes.

Meagher criticised network execs for letting the soap stray from its premise of a seaside community and its original Fletcher family taking in foster children.

“There is still penchant for a River Boy,” he said in an interview with TV Tonight.

“I mean, that was just a great period. But was it Summer Bay? Hmmm…. in my humble opinion, not to that extent,” Meagher added.

He also said that there was nothing wrong with the storylines or the focus on "sex, drugs and rock and roll" but believes that the change of pace "came in too big of a dose," and made the show completely different from its original plot.

Meagher also said that it's about time the show had better LGBTQ+ representation, after the show was previously criticised for lack of sustained LGBTQIA+ characters

“It’d be nice to have a nice gay character come into the Bay. That would be good,” he said.

“However, how many of them do we have in Summer Bay? There would definitely be a percentage, whether they’re above the ground or underground still in a town like the Bay."

“The one thing that I have a bit of a problem with is sometimes when you realise there’s a representative hole when people tend to think, ‘Oh, jeez, we’ve ignored that area,’ and then there’s a wash of it. And you think ‘No community looks like that," he added.

Image: Seven

"Stone the crows": Who made Ray "Alf" Meagher cry

Home and Away legend Ray Meagher has broken down on Channel Seven's This Is Your Life after a series of emotional tributes.

The 78-year-old actor was discussing his life and career at Summer Bay when his past co-stars surprised him with endless praise for his role as Alf.

The first tribute came from Chris Hemsworth, who thanked Ray in a pre-recorded message for his kindness and support during Chris's time on Home and Away.

“Ray Meagher, godfather of Australian television, Australian icon, a flaming legend, my hero. Mate, what can I say?” he began.

“I remember very vividly the first time I walked onto a Home and Away set, the first time I met you. I was teaming with excitement and nerves — mostly about meeting you, the man, the myth, the legend."

“The moment arrived. I remember the doors busting open, and there you were down the end of the hallway, silhouetted by the sun, bathed in glorious light.

“We locked eyes, we got closer. I took a big deep breath and I thought, ‘He’s probably not a hugger’. I lifted my hand…and dived off into the costume department because I had lost my nerve.”

The audience chuckled at the Thor star’s hilarious recollection, but his next admission left Ray fighting back tears.

“Sure enough, you came up to me and you said, ‘Chris, wonderful to meet you. You’re gonna do great here’. You were kind, genuine and supportive, and you’ve remained that through my entire career. Thank you so much buddy, I love you. You’re a dear friend.”

Already overcome with emotion, Ray was presented with another surprise.

Kate Ritchie, who played the role of Sally Fletcher on Home and Away for 20 years alongside Ray, walked onto the set and embraced her co-star.

The pair watched a set of Home and Away scenes from 1990-2008, finishing with their on-screen goodbye at Palm Beach.

“Ray is really so much of what I learned as a person, but also as a performer,” she began, before grabbing Ray’s hand.

“And for both of us, we’ve played those characters for such a long time, that it is inevitable there is so much of us within them."

“When I watch that footage…I actually see two friends. He’s watched me grow from a girl into a woman, and he’s really proud of me. So I’m glad I’ve made you proud, thank you."

The Aussie icon told his former co-star that he’s still proud of her to this day, and his words "still stand".

“You mean a lot to me Ray, you know that,” Kate added, causing Ray to wipe his tears away with a tissue.

Ray has played Alf Stewart since 1988 and currently holds the Guinness World Record for the longest-serving actor in an Australian series.

His appearance on This Is Your Life moved many Home and Away fans online, with floods of people sharing their gratitude for the veteran actor.

"So emotional, tears are flowing. Congratulations Ray!! What a fantastic life!! You’re a wonderful man and a great actor,” one wrote on social media.

“Crying happy tears. It was so lovely to see Ray (Alf) get recognised like this. ‘Stone the crow’ as he would say. I hope he keeps going on the show,” a second added.

Violent killer’s mother slams Victorian sexual assault "gag order"

The mother of Jill Meagher's killer has slammed a "ludicrous" "gag order" proposed by the Victorian government that would prevent the families of deceased sexual assault victims from speaking openly and publicly about their loved one's ordeal in Victoria.

Adrian Ernest Bayley's mother Susan fought hard to bite back her tears while she argued against proposed changes to legislation that was being debated in parliament.

The “gag order” would make families of victims seek for an approved court order to speak about their loved one.

"Why on god's earth would they (the government) prevent these poor innocent girls' names from being used? Why?" Ms Bayley told Neil Mitchell on 3AW.

Adrian Bayley was sentenced to life with a 35-year minimum in 2013 for the murder and rape of Jill Meagher.

The 29-year-old Meagher was attacked as she walked home from a pub in Melbourne in 2012.

Ms Bayley said the changes were "wrong on so many levels" and pleaded for the voices of victims and their families not to be silenced.

"We need to listen to the victim's voices. Just because they're not with us anymore doesn't mean they're less important and their voices shouldn't be heard," Ms Bayley said.

"The families of the victims, their voices need to be heard."

Courtney Herron was brutally beaten to death at a Melbourne park in 2019 and her father has told 9News that nothing will make him relent from sharing his daughter’s name and story.

"I don't want the memory of my daughter Courtney to fade away," John Herron said.

"In the future going through this, I would speak out regardless, I wouldn't have any fear of doing so.

"The reason for that is, if you've lost your child, you really don't have anything further to lose in life. So I'd speak out and take any particular punishment without hesitation," he said.

The 25-year-old woman was found dead by dog walkers in Royal Park at Parkville on May 25, with injuries described by police as "horrendous".

Mr Herron said it was important for the stories of victims to be told.

"The ability to speak out publicly and the support that the public has shown, and the support that the media has shown, has been absolutely critical in getting Courtney's story out there."

Attorney General Jill Hennessy said the legislation would establish a process for families with opposing or different views about the details of victims being published.

"We know it's not perfect and we know it's got to be improved but we've got to take the important first step so there is some process for families of deceased victims," Ms Hennessy said on 3AW.

The Attorney General told Neil Mitchell that victim survivors had been involved in the changes.

The controversial “gag laws” have received an intense response on social media.

Possibly one of Home and Away’s most beloved and easily recognisable faces, Ray Meagher, has recently revealed he is recovering from undergoing an emergency open heart surgery after it was discovered he had extensive “coronary calcification.”

The 75-year-old veteran actor said a routine health check up uncovered three serious blockages in his arteries which resulted in a need for triple bypass surgery, according to the Herald Sun.

Coronary calcification is the buildup of calcium in the arteries which can lead to heart disease as the buildup makes the blood vessels become narrower.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Home and Away (@homeandaway) on Jul 3, 2019 at 2:04pm PDT

Meagher said one of the arteries shows it was “100 per cent [blocked]” and that there “was a good chunk of solid white [calcification].”

The magazine revealed Meagher is now resting comfortably in his Sydney home and feels “very, very lucky” to have gone to his annual heart checkups and stress tests before he jumped behind the wheel to drive to the Sunshine Coast in Queensland for a holiday with his wife, Gilly.

“We were all packed up and ready to drive north, but if we had without seeing the cardiologist, well, you could have a heart attack at the wheel, you kill yourself, you kill your wife, or some other poor innocent people. It’s just horrific to think what could have happened,” he said,

“I’m just glad to be on the planet.”

The veteran actor encourages everyone to see their GP for a regular general heart check.

"It doesn't take long and there's so much to be gained by going to the doctor and finding out the truth about your health, so you can do something about it."

Ray Meagher has been a valuable character on Home and Away for 31 years as Alf Stewart.

Jill Meagher’s husband’s emotional tribute 6 years after her death

On what would have been their tenth wedding anniversary, the husband of rape and murder victim, Jill Meagher, has written an emotional letter to his wife.

Tom Meagher shared the emotional tribute on his Facebook page, where he poured out his grief and heartache.

“Ten years ago today, I was lucky enough to marry this incredible human,” Mr Meagher wrote alongside a photo of Jill on her wedding day.

“When I woke up that day, continuously fumbling over the elusive art of tying a tie and nervously downing cheap white wine way too early in the morning, I imagined the seemingly endless stretch of time we would have together.”

Mr Meagher said he had dreamed about what their life would be like together in five, 10 or 30 years into the future.

“We never made it,” he wrote.

“Four years later she was brutally and violently taken from this world.”

In 2012, 29-year-old Jill Meagher was killed by serial sex offender Adrian Bayley in Melbourne.

Bayley was on parole when he brutally raped and murdered the ABC employee when she was on her way home from work drinks – a crime which was a catalyst for an overhaul of parole.

At the time, the Victoria premier said the state’s new parole laws were now the toughest in Australia.

Mr Meagher revealed that he still visits their wedding venue in remembrance of his wife.

“Only five weeks ago I stood in the Wicklow mountains where we were married, looking up at the canopy in the woods behind the grounds, as I have done many times in the six years since her death.”

Despite feeling like his words were too feeble to express his emotions, he said writing of his wife’s legacy still “unlocks something for me — an expanse, where the artificial separateness between me and her, between life and death dissolves effortlessly.”

Mr Meagher also mentioned his wife’s killer in the letter, saying how him and Jill represent the extremities of good and evil.

“The arsehole that took her from this world communicates with us through violence, misogyny, hatred and death,” he wrote.

“His pallid shadow can never extinguish her light. I carry the scars of Jill’s death because that’s how I remember to carry her light inside me.

“The polar contrast between Jill and her killer are so clearly bookends of the extremity of good and evil that it sometimes feels like an ancient tragedy played out in real life.”

Mr Meagher also condemned violence against women, saying: “In the war on women, this man exemplifies the extremist wing of the hateful and pervasive ideology of male sexual terrorism, but it’s the everyday spectrum of male violence that disturbs me even more.”

“In a culture where the deaths of most women are not newsworthy, are so commonplace that they are seen as incidental, expected and simply inevitable, he certainly does represent the extremist wing”

Mr Meagher ended the emotional letter by saying his wife was a “warrior for love, life and liberation”.

“Thank you for consistently and persistently teaching me how to live, how to think, how to embrace love wholly, and to bear witness to the fire you lit in me and so many others in your short time on this earth. You are loved at every moment of every day.”

Bayley was sentenced to life in prison, with a 35-year non-parole period, for the rape and murder of Jill Meagher.

Judge Geoffrey Nettle said Bayley subjected Meagher to a “savage and degrading” assault in Brunswick, Melbourne on September 22, 2012 and that his previous attacks on women demanded that he receive a lengthy prison sentence.

Ray Meagher reveals why he never had kids

For 30 years while starring as Alf Stewart on Home and Away, Ray Meagher has played a father, stepfather and foster father on the popular show.

Now in a new interview, the Aussie actor has revealed why he never had children of his own.

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, Ray Meagher said: “When I was younger as a freelance actor, I wondered whether I’d be able to feed myself let alone anybody else.”

“It's a funny old profession, it’s very precarious, it's a pretty dodgy old profession employment-wise.

“I have a stepdaughter Rebecca (the daughter of his wife Gilly) who is in her early 40s and I talk to her at least once a week and see her for brekkie or brunch whenever the Home and Away schedule permits, which is maybe once a fortnight, and I love that.”

Meagher no longer has to worry about the uncertainty of his acting career, with his role on Home and Away spanning three decades – earning himself the title of the longest serving soap actor in Australian history.

Last night at the Logies, Meagher took home the award for Most Popular Actor.

During his acceptance speech, Meagher thanked his former co-star Cornelia Frances, who passed away in May this year.

"A lot of the young people go off to Hollywood to audition for bigger and better things. This lady decided to try to get into that studio in the sky,” he said.

“When she got up to the pearly gates, I hope St Peter didn't have the temerity to say, 'You can't come here'.

"I think she would have looked over the top of those horn-rimmed glasses and said, 'Peter, you are the weakest link. Goodbye'.

"Cornie, we know you are up there looking down with the champagne. We are not going to mourn your passing anymore. We are going to celebrate your life."

In the interview, the actor explained his wife's absence at the significant event.

“Gilly would rather swallow a tonne of bricks than go to the Logies,” Meagher said.

“She says ‘That’s your work, you go and you don’t have to worry about me … not knowing a whole heap of people’ so she’s very comfortable with that.”

In an interview with the Daily Mail in May, Meagher revealed that he was reluctant to leave Summer Bay as he wasn’t sure how he would cope in retirement.

“I've never really thought about it [retirement],” he said.

He added: “You know, I'm not sure what I'd do if I retire - I'm not into gardening. I hope it's a long way off. The main thing at this age is to try and stay fit and healthy and well and, so far, touch something, that's working, at least.”

Home and Away’s Ray Meagher shares update on Johnny Ruffo’s cancer battle

Home and Away actor Ray Meagher has provided an update on former co-star Johnny Ruffo’s cancer battle after his shock diagnosis six months ago.

In an interview with Daily Mail Australia, Meagher explained that Ruffo is doing well despite the situation he is in.

“I had coffee with Ruffo the other day. You probably know that he's having a problem with brain cancer at the moment,” Meagher, who plays Alf on Home and Away, said.

“But he's still as sharp as a tack. We had a coffee and a good yarn.” Meagher revealed that it was nice to connect with his former co-star and hoped Johnny would recover quickly.

“He's a good boy Johnny and it was nice to see him, and he was in really good spirits and we wish him a speedy recovery.”

Reminiscing on their memories together on the Aussie soap show, Meagher recalled one scene where their characters encountered a near-death experience.

While on a row boat together, Ruffo’s character Chris accidentally added death cap mushrooms to a batch of risotto, causing Alf to slip into unconsciousness.

Laughing while thinking back on the memories Meagher said, “He had to row the boat and his rowing skills are as about as good as mine, it's a wonder we both didn't drown."

Last week, Ruffo appeared on The Morning Show and gave a positive update on his health.

A post shared by Johnny Ruffo (@johnny_ruffo) on Feb 14, 2018 at 2:28pm PST

“I've got a little way to go now but everything's looking good and is on the mend,” he said.

Meanwhile, Meagher has announced he is launching a new condiment called Ray’s Flamin’ Hot Sauce.

“It's something that's been bubbling away in the background for a long long time and it sort of started when I was a kid in the bush,” he said.

When the actor was a child, he would add Worcestershire sauce to his bread with his brothers.

“Then of course I graduated to all sorts of hot sauces and chilli sauces as I got older and I love spicy foods now,” he said.

The one reason why Ray Meagher has stayed on Home and Away for 30 years

He’s been a constant presence on our television screens for over 30 years, but Home and Away’s Ray Meagher – or Alf Stewart, as he will always be known to many – still is startled by his fame.

"I feel [fame] is the domain of the more attractive, younger people that people are interested in looking at and reading about," the 73-year-old told TV Week in an exclusive interview.

Like the character he’s played for three decades, Ray is friendly, down-to-earth and talkative. But there's one crucial difference.

"I don't think you've heard me say 'flamin'' or 'galah' once – or any of the character expressions," he says. "There is a difference there.

"I hope I don't do my block quite as quickly as Alf does. He usually apologises, but if you get up to make a cup of tea, you might miss it."

With a successful TV and film career before he moved to Summer Bay, a question that dogs the veteran Home and Away actor is why has stayed on the show for so long.

"There have been a couple of times along the way where I've thought, 'Maybe I should go and do that,'" he says, admitting he often asks himself the question. "Realistically, I don't need more than five fingers to name the jobs that were firm offers that I would have done other than this.

"So, this job has stopped me doing those five jobs. But then you look at the opportunities it has created."

But it should come as no surprise the key reason why Ray has stayed year after year - it's the people.

"It's what makes up the show – it's the people," he says. "It's the people who have made it such a wonderful place to go to work for so long."

But with 30 years of ups and down on the show – with his character having faced every scenario imaginable, the latest of which he finds himself fighting for his life – how much longer does he see himself going? Will he be retiring anytime soon?

"I'm sure there is," he says. "Exactly when that is, I have to talk to Julie McGauran [Channel Seven's head of drama] in the next few months. That will give a clearer indication as to when that might be. I've had an incredible run."
